Protective Pastures

Protection-pastures2            Protection-pastures1

When pastures were initially established on the more than 20,000 ha of land now used for dairy and beef production clumping tussock species of introduced tropical grasses such as Guinea , Hamill and ……… were used.

These did not provide good   protection of the soil surrounding each clump under sustained stocking rates and high rainfall.

These initial establishment species have been progressively replaced by matt forming stoloniferous varieties such as Brachiaria Decumbens,  Humidicola and …………. which provide almost total coverage of the soil and excellent protection from erosion in high rainfall events.
